competition.

Hello every one
Today we had a fashion event at a local community centre. The event was organized to collect money for cancer research. we participated, one it was a good cause and secondly we had a chance to show off some of the creations from Jan's sewing solutions.
The event was not too well organized but the turn out was really good. the clothes looked amazing. You would need to have been there to fully appreciate the look of the outfits. These clothes were not designed for the specific girls that modeled them. also these girls were not models but just some friends of the organizers who volunteered. they did well, considering the poor staging and the lack of experience
I hope you enjoy the event and like the clothes and go on to make these for yourself and your loved ones inshallah.
All the outfits have some thing in common so I want every one to write back what you think is the theme.
competition.
lets make it a competition.
The competition will be open to all members.
All correct answers will be put in a draw and one winner will be selected.
All reply's are through the forum. (make sure to register at the forum if you are not already a member.

ordering on line

salam every one
once all the web site problems are sorted, a big worry will be lifted off my shoulders. I am really looking forward to concentrating on what i know best and that is design and sewing.
I have some very big plans for what we will introduce into the on line shop, the video library and the forum. with the help and support from many of the members, I am pretty sure we will get there.
I get lots of phone calls from over sea members and have had lengthy discussions with them. it is all ways nice to talk to members as this breaks the barrier and a personal friendship is developed.
I am just doing a video of all the orders I have received over the last couple weeks and hopefully will be shipping those of.
yesterday I had a phone call from NewYork and spoke to Priyam
Priyam explained the problems she faced with regards to not only tailoring but also sourcing the fabrics. Priyam had problems with armhole cutting and also sleeve attaching. she is not alone in this as this is a occurring problem for many of the members.
Priyam requested a template of a kameez in her size to be sent with her order. when i was speaking with Priyam, i suggested i make her template and from this i also cut and stitch a pair of clothes for her. i will tape the whole process and upload. i have never met Priyam and the only thing i have from her is some basic measurements.
this should help many members in quite a few different areas. i am hoping this will give reassurance to many of the members to become more bold and active.
there is generally a fear of the unknown, specially over the internet. many people are reluctant to experiment and order on line. I don't want to push any member to order but I do want to give every one the option of choosing wisely.
I have been in tailoring for very long time and fabric retail for over 10 years. customer interaction and satisfaction was always my goal. you probably heard me say this in many of my videos. i buy the fabric with a visual image in my head of what i intend to make from this. if I go on to styling and selling this to the customer, I have no problem. some customers also have an idea specially if they sew. others will just buy, thinking the tailor or seamstress will work wonders. it is these customers that loose out. the tailor or seamstress is not a designer, nor have they got time to experiment and create wonders with your fabric. they will do a basic job and and go on to the next. customer is left disappointed as they did not visualize the end result to look so basic. this is 99% feed back that i get.
the benefit of shopping at Jan's sewing solutions, is currently the best you can get.
you see the fabric and its qualities explained with guidelines on its suitability for the chosen design.
if its a pre-cut suit, what can be achieved with the designated fabric and best best lay plan to suit most sizes.
pricing and value for money, specially utilizing on left overs, coordination is explained.
step by step sewing of the garment is videoed and available to achieve same results.
full garment is shown, fully sewn with end result.
they say the "proof of the pudding is in the eating". the dish is on the table, whether one goes on to taste the pudding or just keep wondering of its taste is entirely up to the individual.
do ponder over the thought and if you still feel undecided then have a chat with other members or existing customers. Because there's some brilliant offers on and I would not want you to miss out.
regards
Jan

deli ma. set up sewing as a profession
firstly, before you think of doing sewing for a profession, you need to master the skill for yourself. so my first question is are you sewing your own clothes and happy with what you stitch and wear. if not then you need to master the skill for your self before others will trust to pay you to sew for them.
you will get automatic customer flow if people like what you are sewing and wearing. worst thing you can do is take customer orders and ruin their fabric as not only will you loose time and effort but the customer will demand compensation and also tarnish your name.
my advice would be to buy cheep fabric like chiffon and make nice suits for your self. this way you practice and gain experience and also advertise what you are accomplishing. add trimming and borders to your kameez to give them uniqueness.
if you go on to take any one order, try to stick to simple sewing and even charge less until you build your confidence. don't take order if fabric is difficult to sew or customer is very fussy or odd shape or size as this may prove to be difficult for you to fulfill. also stay away from designing as this is time consuming and underpaid. attempt to do what you have already successfully accomplished.
try to distinguish why you are sewing for people. is the motive to try and earn a income or are you doing it for pleasure.
pleasure of design sewing is either for one own self or a loved one. this is why its called designer because its unique with lots of effort put into it. customers are often selfish and expect you to put the same effort into their clothes when they only want to pay basic. this is unfair to the designer and machinist. stand firm and say sorry time is money and if you require this it will cost you. its better to loose that customer than to do slave labor. (believe me been there and done that. no body ever thanks you for it ).
hope this helps a bit and we will discuss this further.
Regards
jan

Tailoring Needs

Tailoring needs
I am currently doing a questionnaire to understand the needs of my web site members to bring about some positive changes.
I need your assistance in pin pointing the difficulties in our fabric retail and tailoring.
If there is a good positive response then I would like to implement some changes to better our service according to your suggestions.
I am going to break this down into 5 sections
  1. local tailoring
  2. oversea tailoring
  3. self tailoring
  4. local ready made
  5. ready made online buying
local tailoring
  • Do you have tailoring difficulties?
  • Are you happy with your tailor?
  • Is your designer/tailor able to understand your needs?
  • Do you get prompt service?
  • Are you happy with the tailoring bills?
If this was a survey in the shop then I can guarantee 95% of the customers as dissatisfied with their tailors, most likely in all aspects.
My question is, how do we address this to overcome the problem and gain a satisfactory result.
During the 10 years of fabric retail business, I have seen a massive decline in fabric sales. The main reason for that is, buying the fabric is easy, its stitching that's a problem.
Times have changed and we are more fashion conscious. We no longer like the plain simple salwar kameez that our mums made for us. Every day new styles come out and we aspire to have them, but can the lady down the road understand them. Shes not a designer. She merely does it for a quick few pounds. She is self taught due to necessity, not for customer demands or satisfaction. If she can make 3 plain suits in a day and make 24 pounds, is she going to attempt to design something she has never done for 15 pounds and risk loosing her simple earning by doing something complicated.
Chances are no. so when you try and explain the design she will say I have no time. I can understand her logic. It simply isn't economically viable.
Labor in the west is expensive and tailoring is an underpaid job. This is one of the biggest reason for the decline in good tailors.
Most good tailors are men. They often have the training done abroad so although they are good in general sewing, they lack many other qualities.
Tailoring is not just about stitching the garment. A good tailor needs to understand
  • fabric and texture
  • design and suitability
  • customer relationship (body flows, design ethics)
  • planning, defining and understanding customer needs
  • management and timetable
These are all the flows with our oversea tailors and local seamstress. One who has all the above abilities will not hang around to do tailoring because as I said, its an underpaid and demanding job.
The other reason they often find it hard to continue in the trade is because they have to please the female clients. This is a hard job in itself. We are often undecided about what we want doing with the fabric. The client wants the tailor to suggest ideas, remember he is a tailor , not a designer. I often have customers come in asking for suggestions on fabric they have bought. If you bought the fabric then you should know what you want making from it.
I could spend hours writing on this topic and still not reach a conclusion so I want feed back from you guys
the person who can address this issue, I assure you will hit the jackpot
so whats the answer?

Blind buying

Blind buying! Is it a good choice?
  • Do you have items stitched and sent from abroad for you?
  • does some one else choose for you?
  • are you happy with their choice of fabric selection?
  • are you happy with their choice of color selection?
  • are you happy with their choice of design?
  • was the fitting and style good?
  • were you happy with the price?
  • did you get good wear out of the outfits?
  • given a choice would you rather choose your own fabric, color, design and style or continue to buy blind.?
To overcome problems with tailoring, many people have started sending money to family members abroad for items to be purchased and sent over. If you are one of these people then would you rate this service to be a satisfactory solution to our tailoring needs.
During my years of business, I have tried and tested every method. My own experience was that out of the 10 outfits sent, only 2 were satisfactory, giving me 20% rate. To me this was an expensive result. I was better off buying or paying a very high price locally than this method.
When getting items from abroad, we tend to forget many other factors like
have you considered what you would be putting the other person through to buy your goods and then to locate goods tailors to stitch your clothing according to your needs.
If you have any experience in buying or tailoring say in Pakistan then you would know what I am talking about.
Its a quite a big burden to lay on some one else to do your deed. They would obviously comply to the best of their ability, but are you going to be happy with their choice.
In a way I feel we are selfish when we make this request.
Just consider
In general have you seen the person you are intrusting to make your purchases wear or make good buys for you in past?
Do you trust their judgment and choice to be sound, specially when selecting for some one else?
(are you sure there wont be a hint of jealousy or just fob you off with whatever comes their way, remember we are talking about very narrow minded individuals.)
put your self in their shoes and ask yourself are how would you feel if the same was asked of you?
I don't know the answers to these questions from the prospective of the viewers but if I was answering for my self, then my feed back would be pretty negative.
That being the case, would I still continue to waste my money ,time and effort and continue to buy blind?
WE NEED A GOOD SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM
so what prompted me to write this article?
It was a customer and a good friend who came into shop, asking for advice. Basically what happened, her husband whet to Pakistan. She sent fabric over to have a jhilbab sewn. The result was horrendous. Sad thing was they paid 1500 rupees, to have their fabric ruined. The lady was in tears. Not only was the jhilbab ruined but she also had 6 pairs of clothes that where also ruined. Her husband had selected the fabrics and told her that he had paid 3000 rupees a suit and paid 800 rupees each for stitching.
I could understand her pain, because I had been through the same experience. She was stuck with clothes that were no good to her and no way of buying any more because the husband was taunting her. He fulfilled her request by spending the money, time and effort in buying and running around to tailors to get them ready. This wasn't his fault either. He didn't go to Pakistan for that. He had never made a choice for her here so how could he be expected to make the the right choice in a land which is cut throat and only takes advantage.
Think about this and all responses welcome!
